How things can change. Was it really only a few days ago that the supporters were talking up the prospects of winning the Cascadia Cup at home? But then the Timbers lost in Seattle, and won here tonight. If the Whitecaps are to repeat as champions, they will have to complete the Quest for La Quinta in Seattle on October 10th. A win would guarantee them the Cup, though could also claim it with a win in Portland on September 20th, and a draw in Seattle.

When the Whitecaps play the Galaxy, they usually come off second best. Before tonight's match, they had faced each other eleven times, and the Caps had a mere five points to show for it, with none of them coming in California. Ten years and two weeks ago, Major League Soccer brought forth on this continent, a new club, conceived in discrimination, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal... at least as long as they are of Mexican descent. There are some in the Rain City who view Chicago as one of Vancouver's chief rivals. Sadly, that is not the case in MLS. In four years, we've played them five times, winning twice, drawing twice, and losing an away match back in 2012. In the NASL, Vancouver did very well against the old Chicago Sting, winning 11 matches, and losing a mere six. But there is no real animosity between these two sides, no point of contention.

Schellas Hyndman may be gone, but his rigid system of Vancouvering is still very much in place, serving as the keystone to FC Dallas' psyche. Not that we're surprised. His successor, Óscar Pareja, spent four years learning at Hyndman's side as an assistant, before taking as Dallas' Fernando Clavijo put it, a "two year vacation in Colorado."

Four years, it's been four years since the Caps left USL for greener pastures. They waved goodbye to Swangard, so long to Marcus Haber, and bid adieu to the likes of Rochester and Austin. On Tuesday, they returned to those roots.
