After conceding seven goals in their last two matches, Charleston did well to keep a clean sheet on Saturday against the Charlotte Eagles, but a win would have been nice.

"This is a tie and we wanted three points," Charleston manager Mike Anhaeuser said after the match. "Defensively we did a really good job. It was good to get a shutout. We just need to get that mix back and get one or two goals."

Vancouver Whitecaps FC's Emmanuel Adjetey and Mamadou Diouf started the match, with Adam Mena coming on in the 69th minute, but the real interest from a Vancouver perspective was that Jonathan Leathers was playing for the Eagles.

Yes, our Jonathan Leathers.

We last caught up with the Athens, Georgia native on 9 November 2011 at Vancouver Whitecaps FC's Post Season "Evaluation" Camp at the Burnaby Lake Sports Complex. We didn't see him again until today, when our own Kim Morgan Gregory found him wearing the colours of Charlotte Eagles SC.

Jonathan Leathers was last seen at the Burnaby Lake Sports Complex on 9 November 2011...

That's a span of 977 days, or 2 years, 8 months, 3 days, 5 hours, and 7 minutes, give or take a couple of minutes.

And what's more, Letahers wasn't alone. He had Bilal Duckett to keep him company, another casualty of the 2011 season. But whereas Duckett had played 48 times for the Harrisburg City Islanders, New England Revolution, Rochester Rhinos, and Eagles this year, Leathers didn't play a game for more than two years.

From the moment he was taken off for Jeb Brovsky in the 46th minute of a Cascadia Cup match against Seattle Sounders FC at Empire Field on 25 September 2011, he didn't feature as a starter, substitute, or even unused substitute until 5 April 2014, when he played the first 46 minutes in a USL Pro match against Dayton Dutch Lions FC.

As to the actual game, possession was relatively even in the first half, with the Battery finding the best opportunities to break the deadlock. In the 9th minute, Justin Portillo collected the ball on the edge of the box, cut to the middle, only to find his shot saved by Charlotte goalkeeper Brock Duckworth.

... until he appeared in Charleston on 12 July 2014.

Later in the half, with Dane Kelly at the top of the box, he was able to pick out Quinton Griffith, whose shot sailed agonisingly close to the crossbar, but alas, it was above, rather than below.

Both sides clearly wanted the win, pushing forward, making mistakes, but managing to keep the game scoreless. On virtually the last play of the match, Maikel Chang made a run down the right side, found Haviel Cordoves, who took a shot that rolled mere inches wide of the post.

Charleston had five shots on target during the match, while their Northern neighbours managed only one shot before the crowd of 4,698.
