On August 9th, the Whitecaps unveiled Martin Rennie as their next permanent manager. He would replace Tommy Soehn, who had managed the side on an interim basis since Teitur Thórdarson was relieved of his duties back on May 30th.
Sounds simple enough, except there was one little thing, hardly worth noting. You see, Rennie already had a job. He had nine league matches, plus the playoffs, to navigate with Carolina RailHawks FC or the North American Soccer League.
And so, Soehn’s interim management was extended. With both the Whitecaps and the RailHawks seasons over, it was decided that Vancouver would host a post season camp for Rennie and his staff to evaluation the squad that they had inherited.
Alexandre Morfaw was the first casualty of the camp, waived before it was even over. In the coming day, more heads will fall on the chopping block, and while we can’t say for certain who will be gone, rumblings have been made that designated player Mustapha Jarju may be bought out of his contract.
At the back, a complete overhaul could be in store as Jonathan Leathers, Greg Janicki, Michael Boxall, Bilal Duckett, and Jay Nolly failed to impress. In point of fact, the most impressive thing Jay Nolly accomplished during the camp was to break a crossbar at Percy Perry Stadium. We’re still not sure how that happened.
For those who will not be with us for much longer, we wish them all the best. For those who will survive this camp, we offer our most heartfelt congratulations. Of course, the survival may be short lived, as there is a preseason camp in just a few months.
