'Caps Continue Clear Out, Part ways with Captain Jon Erice

Vancouver Whitecaps FC announced on Wednesday morning that the club and Captain Jon Erice had agreed to a mutual contract termination.

Erice joins Anthony Blondell, Doneil Henry, Brett Levis, Zac MacMath, Brendan McDonough, Sean Melvin, David Norman Jr., PC, and Scott Sutter, who have all departed, whether by transfer, option declined, or out of contract this close season.

Blondell went to Chilean side C.D. Huachipato for an undisclosed fee, Henry went to Korean side Suwon Samsung Bluewings, also for an undisclosed fee, while MacMath stayed in the league with Real Salt Lake giving Vancouver $50,000 in Targeted Allocation Money, and Norman Jr. joined expansion side Inter Miani for a conditional 2022 draft pick.

Whitecaps take Midfielder Ryan Raposo at No. 4

"I'm really excited," Ryan Raposo said after being drafted by Vancouver Whitecaps FC with the fourth overall pick in the 2020 draft. "Vancouver is the place I wanted to end up and I got my wish. 'Caps raid Serbian second division, sign Canadian starlet Derek Cornelius

"Derek is one of the top young players in a new generation of Canadian talent," said Whitecaps FC manager Marc Dos Santos. "For his age, he has the right composure and characteristics we look for at the centre back position. We have followed his progress... and believe he has developed in the right way. He has also been exposed to different environments, and this is always good for a player’s development. Cornelius, 21, is the son of a Barbadian father and a Jamaican mother. He comes to the 'Caps after having spent the last six years between Russia, Germany, and most recently, Serbia.

After starting 20 of FK Javor Ivanjica's matches during last year's relegation hit season, the Canadian has struggled for minutes, playing only three times.

Vancouver Whitecaps draft Georgetown defender McDonough with second-round pick

Vancouver Whitecaps FC drafted Georgetown University centre back Brendan McDonough in the second round, 35th overall, of the 2019 Major League SuperDraft on Friday.

McDonough, 22, made 56 starts in 63 appearances at Georgetown, collecting two goals and two assists while serving as captain over the last two seasons.

The 6-foot-2 defender helped the Hoyas to three Big East Tournament titles in his four years, scoring the game-winner in last year’s championship match. As a senior, McDonough was named to the All-East Region Second Team and the All-Big East Conference Second Team after he helped Georgetown to a league-best 10 clean sheets on the season.

TAM, GAM, thank you Rapids

Earlier today, Vancouver Whitecaps FC announced that they had sent $277,500 in Targeted Allocation Money or TAM to Colorado Rapids SC in exchange for $185,000 in General Allocation Money or GAM. Now, before you start scratching your head, there is a method to this apparent madness.

In an exceeding bit of generalisation, TAM is meant to bridge the gap between Designated Players and regular Players. Any player earning more than $504,375, all figures US, automatically becomes a Designated Player. A club can apply TAM to their Budgeted Salary to make them a regular player, as the Whitecaps did with Kei Kamara.

GAM on the other hand, can be applied to a Designated Player, paying their Budgeted Salary down, but is mostly used on the regular Players, like for instance, if the 'Caps were close to the ceiling, and wanted to officially add David Edgar.

Jordon Mutch set to reignite career with the 'Caps

It would be fair to say that Jordon Mutch hasn't exactly been having a lot of fun this year. Crystal Palace are mired in a relegation fight, where they currently sit 17th in the Premier League, and his last action, if you can call it such, was as an unused substitute at Bristol City in the League Cup. He's also sat on the bench at Old Trafford, and at home to Huddersfield Town this year.
